Q: Can I use a different transmission oil for my Ford Explorer instead of Mercon ATF?
I have been looking for Mercon ATF to change my Ford explorer 2002 XLS – manual transmission but I don’t get it at where I am. Am I able to use any other high grade tramsmission oil with causing damage to my transmission box? The workshop suggested a different type of oil and said it has to be changed a 20,000km. The Ford dealer I contacted had Mercon V and that is for automatic transmission.
A: Fordstarted using Mercon V in all transmissions in ‘95 until recently. now they have mercon lv and mercon ls for automatics. definitely use mercon v.
Q: How can you check or add transmission fluid into Ford Explorer?
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. The transmission is keep slipping ever since I had new transmission fluid put into my 60,000 mile transmission from a mechanic, ever since then it kept slipping and making strange humming noise when I slow down, any advice on how I can add or check how much fluid is left in there, because there is not a transmission dipstick under the hood, Thanks!
Automatic Transmission connected to a 4.6l v8 engine, Thanks!
A: 02 and newer 4 door Explorers have no dipstick. They have a plug on the bottom of the tranny pan that, when removed, and with the tranny fluid at the correct temperature, is expected to just drip fluid when it’s at the right level… it gets rather complex, so it’s better to have a professional check for you.

Q: How do you remove the stock radio from an ‘06 Ford Explorer?
I just recently bought an iPod adapter for my ‘06 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition. I need to pull out the stock 6 CD changer radio so I can plug in the adapter and set it into the back of it. Does anyone how to get the radio out without tearing up the car?
p.s. if anyone has tips on installing these kind of adapters that’d be great. it’s a brandmotion that plugs into the auxiliary satellite input.
Thank you for any help!
A: the trim around the radio just pops off. youll need either a panel removal tool or a wide flat screw driver might work. put a strip of tape around the tool to help avoid scratches, start from the top and pry it out. then four 7mm bolts hold the radio in.
Q: What’s the difference between 4X4 Auto and All Wheel Drive on a Ford Explorer?
On a Ford Explorer, what is the difference between a 4X4 Auto and AWD? In the brief description they give on the website, they kind of sound the same. I used to have a 97 Ford Explorer with AWD. The description of the 4X4 Auto feature today sounds exactly like the AWD from 97. Why can’t they just give us the old fashion 2WD, 4WD High and 4WD Low feature? (that must make too much sense).
A: Auto 4×4 (full time 4WD) and AWD are the same in that they both distribute power to the wheels automatically. However, the Auto 4×4 also allows the user manually switch to 4WD High and 4WD Low, whereas the AWD doesn’t offer low-range gearing.
Q: how to change a front lower ball joint on a 2003 ford explorer?
im going to replace a front lower ball joint on my 2003 ford explorer 2wd. are there any tricks or tips i should know before i start?
A: Drive to your local dealer. Pull into the service drive. Speak with a Service Rep. Tell him you need the lower ball joint replaced. Go hang out in the customer lounge for about 3 hours. Drink their coffee, watch their television. Go argue for a discount because you don’t feel like paying the amount quoted to you. Threaten to give them a bad survey. Get what you want. Drive home.
Not a bad day’s work.
Q: What would a 93 ford explorer be considered as?
I am going to be getting a 93 ford explorer. So would that be considered as a truck, suv, bronco? Or what? Im just wondering??
A: It’s considered a clunker
Q: where can i find instructions on changing brake pads for a FORD Explorer?
The Ford Explorer is a 2000 Limited edition with disk brakes on both front and back.
A: Stop by one of the local parts stores and get a repair and maintenance manual. Chilton and Haynes manuals are what they normally have and they’ll detail what you need to do.
Q: my ford explorer takes long to shift into 2nd gear.what do i start troubleshooting?
I have a 1991 ford explorer auto tranny,it has a delay in getting into 2nd or 3rd gear after i put hard foot pedal it takes the gears. if i jump on the freeway at high speed there’s no problem at all i could punch it and it respond great. My problem is after 1st gear can anyone give me a hint?
A: i also have a 91 explorer and if your talking about wot.wide open throttle and the delay between shifts that is normal.when you stomp it at low speeds it winds out the gears to give better accel like if your trying to pass . now if it does it and your not putting it to the floor then you may have a valve body sticking or the trans may be just slipping because of age. but whatever you do never under penalty of death get rid of it for a chevy. walking is so much better then pushing a bowtie
Q: How do i take out my stock radio in my 1999 ford explorer to put a aftermarket deck in?
How do i take out my stock radio in my 1999 ford explorer to put a aftermarket deck
A: You need a Ford Radio removal tool. See pic in link below.
P.S. Are you removing an RDS CD-Cassette Radio? Does your display work? My unit’s display works when it feels like it. Same with the volume control. It’s a great radio when it works, unfortunately that is only about 25% of the time.
Q: What fuse in my fuse box needs to be changed to fix the overhead console on my 1999 Ford Explorer?
My overhead console has gone out but flashes on when I start my Ford Explorer so I know that the fuse simply needs to be changed. However, I don’t know which fuse needs to be changed. I have looked at online diagrams but none of them specificly states what fuse I need to change. Does anyone know exactly which fuse it is?
A: Probably an instrument fuse or map light fuse. But since it flashes on… one might think something else has gone wrong but a good place to start at is… check the fuse.
Learn how to use a test light. I use test lights to check everything. They will tell you if a fuse is blown, where you have power, where you don’t, if a switch is working or not. Anyone who does not know how to use a test light does not know the basics to diagnose a problem.
I’m not being mean… I just think you will save yourself lots of grief and money if you learn to diagnose with a test light.
Q: How do I take off the wiper blades on a ‘97 Ford Explorer?
My boyfriend and I bought new wiper blades for our 97 Ford Explorer (not the Sport) because the old ones are crap and we’re driving across the country soon.
But we’ve been trying for a good 2 hours to figure out how to get the old ones off. Any help would be gladly appreciated!
A: Stacey is correct.
Q: 2000 Ford Explorer Brakes are squeaking and I need help with the diagnostics? How do I know if it’s the front?
I have roughly 100,000 miles on the car now (2000 Ford Explorer, American Spec) and I guess everything is going wrong now. I do have another question with regards to tires. I am unsure what to order or should I just let the mechanic take care of it. But then I am thinking what if he says the front and back both need replacing and they really don’t. What do I look for and what can I do?
THANKS!
A: It most likely is the front. Keep in mind, just because the brakes are squeaking does not mean there is something wrong with them. Squeaks can be caused by many things. It could be the friction material used. That vehicle is designed to have ceramic brake pads not semi metallic. One thing about ceramic pads, there are many different formulas. Use Pads from Ford or Akebono brand pads. The main caues of squeaks is vibration of the brake pad. So remember to lubricate all metal to metal contact points of the brake pad with high temp lube. (DO NOT LUBE FRICTION MATERIAL) Also make sure any and all hardware (spring slips, sleeves, slides etc) is in good shape. If the rotors are not smooth flat and clean, they should be machined and washed with soap and water after machining. As far as the tires. Look to see that you have at least 1/8″ of tread all the way across the tread and all the way around the tire.
Q: Is Ford Explorer a good car for my first car ? I am 16 just got my license. What is the most popular color ?
I like the Ford explorer and I am thinking of buying it for safety, styling, and handling. But I need to know if it is a really good car with low cost maintenance.
A: I think that the Ford Explorer is definitely a good car for someone who just got their license. I’m actually thinking of getting one in a couple of months when I turn 16.
The colors that I see mostly are red and white.
What year Ford Explorer are you buying? If I were you I would buy a newer model cause there are lots of problems with the old ones like they are prone to rolling.(I know, someone I knew was killed in a rollover in a Ford Explorer.)
Anyways, safety wise, I’d go with the newer models because they have a five star crash rating.
As for maintenance, here’s a website with common problems and I guess you could just google how much they would cost to fix.
Well I hope I did help you <3
